Ideas For Unusual Carnival Games

Carnival games offer amusing activities to keep guests entertained.

Carnival games are an amusing and low-cost way to entertain guests at a party, fundraiser or other special event. However, many carnival games, such as a bottle and ring toss, are much too common to entice many players. Unusual carnival games add a creative twist to basic attractions to help keep the activity new and interesting.

Golf Putting Game

Buy, rent or build a putting board with faux grass for a golf putting carnival game. The board should have a large circle at the end with a hole in the middle. The game can remain plain and offer prizes for a hole-in-one, or several boards can be decorated to create a miniature golf course with prizes for high game scores.

Inflatable Games

Many party rental stores offer inflatable obstacle courses in addition to inflatable bouncing activities. The courses are usually for two players at a time and include climbing, crawling, swimming, running and sliding obstacles. Inflatable Sumo wrestling games are also popular and include blow-up wrestler suits for two people. These games are amusing enough---and expensive enough---that they don't require any prize trinkets to entice players.

Penguin Knockdown Game

Paint plastic soda bottles to look like cartoonish penguins, and paint plastic balls to look like snowballs for a unique twist on a bottle-and-ball toss. Set the penguin bottles up in a line or stack them in a pyramid shape. The player stands at the line and tries to knock over the penguins with a "snowball" ball. Prizes can include an ice cream sandwich for a summer carnival or a snowman-making kit for a winter carnival.

Sailboat Race Game

A 6-foot-long, deep, rectangular tub with two lanes that are 1-foot-wide creates a racetrack for a sailboat game. Place a plastic toy sailboat in each lane of a water-filled tub. Players blow into long straws to create wind to propel their sailboat to the finish line. Provide toy sailboats, sailboat stickers or sailor's hats for game prizes.

Tic-Tac-Toe Game

Combine old-fashion tic-tac-toe with a beanbag toss to create an unusual carnival game. Set up nine buckets, bowls or boxes to serve as the game grid. Players toss three "X" marked beanbags in an attempt to get a straight line and win the game. Two people can play a single game with "X" and "O" marked beanbags. Offer game winners a plastic bracelet, keychain, bouncy ball or water gun as a prize.

Troll Toss Game

Give a basic beanbag toss a monster twist with a troll-themed carnival game. Instead of a board with holes to toss the beanbags into, the troll toss uses small, troll-shaped pieces of plywood secured to a block with a thick hinge. The player must stand at the playing line and throw a beanbag to knock over the troll. Give players who knock over one or more trolls a prize, such as a troll-shaped eraser, mini troll figurine or troll stickers.
