Make Decorations For A Party

Wine bottle and wine glass decorated with festive ribbons.

Being in charge of party decorations may be intimidating to some. It takes much planning and organizing to decorate a room in a manner that is consistent with the party theme. It also takes a lot of planning if you are trying to stick to a budget. You need to get as much "wow" out of the decorations as you can, without going overboard on your expenses. Consider making your own party decorations if you want to save a little cash. Not only will it save you money, the decorations will be unique enough to be remembered. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Create tissue paper flowers to use as decorations. Stack several squares of tissue paper together, then fold the stack using an accordion fold. An accordion fold is two or more folds that result with the sheet opening like a fan. Brochures are often folded in an accordion fold.

Loop an end of a pipe cleaner around the middle of the folded tissue paper. Wrap the end of the pipe cleaner around until it is secure. Open the folds of the tissue paper. This will create a circular pattern; resulting in a tissue paper flower.

2. Make a balloon arch to welcome your party guests. Purchase an arch strip online or at a local craft store. The strip will be a clear, plastic strip with holes punched in it. Fill your balloons with helium, then stick the untied balloon end through a hole. Tie off the balloon once it is through the hole. The knot will keep the balloon in place. Alternate your balloons on both sides of the strip. Attach each end of the strip to the floor to create your balloon arch.

3. Use big, beautiful bows along table or countertop edges. Purchase satin ribbon with a width of at least 2 inches. Cut the ribbon into strips 12 to 14 inches long. Pick up one strip and eyeball the midpoint. Use your hands to form two loops on either side of the midpoint. Cross the loops at their base. This will create an open circle below the place where the loops have been crossed. Tuck one loop under and through the circle. Gently tug at both loops. This will form your bow.

4. Paint your own martini glasses and use them to accentuate table settings. Purchase several glass martini glasses and glass craft paint. Gently tape paper stencils onto the sides of a glass. Dip a small brush into the paint and create an outline first. Allow the outline to completely dry. Go back and fill in the outline with any color you desire. Using a different color to fill in the design will make your design stand out better. If you want to add details, such as eyes, mouth, etc., make sure the fill-in paint has completely dried before you start.

5. Make your own party pennant banner. Stack 5 or 6 pieces of stationery paper together, and draw a triangle on the top piece. The triangle needs to be large, nearly as big as the full sheet of paper. Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut out the triangle from the stack of paper. Use one of the triangles as a template to cut out several other triangles from the stationery. Hold the flat end of the triangle up to a piece of ribbon or yarn. Fold the flat edge over the ribbon and staple it in place. Continue to place the triangles next to each other on the line and staple in place. The tips should be pointing down from the line when you are done.
