Make Message In A Bottle Invitations

A message in the bottle conjures up thoughts of desert islands, tropical beaches and pirates. Set the tone of your beach-, pirate- or tropical-themed party with message in the bottle invitations. These party invites are inexpensive, simple and fun to make. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Purchase your bottles, either glass or plastic.

2. Fill the bottle 1/4 way up with sand. You can buy sand or gather sand from the beach. If using sand from the beach, bake it in the oven first to dry it and make it finer.

3. Design the invitation on the computer. Include all the relevant information such as time, place, directions, who the celebration is for and what kind of party it is. Print these out on parchment paper.

4. Place the parchment paper in a shallow container of tea. Dip it in a couple times or let sit in the tea for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove and let dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Once the paper is dry, take a lighter and carefully burn the edges to make the paper look old and worn.

5. Poke or punch a hole near the top of the invitation. Place a string, thin piece of leather or raffia through the hole and tie it in a knot at the top, making a long loop with which the invitation will be pulled out of the bottle. Roll the parchment paper invitation into a scroll. Cut a short piece of raffia, rope or other cording. Wrap it around the scroll and tie in a knot or bow to keep the scroll tightly closed.

6. Place some decorative items in the bottle such as plastic palm trees, mini umbrellas or seashells. Then place the rolled-up scroll invitation in the bottle. Make sure the loop of string pokes out the top of the bottle. Place a cork in the bottle.
