Instructions For Crochet Carnation Flowers

You can use yarn to crochet carnations.

You're not limited to making afghans, scarves or beanies when you crochet. Using some different techniques, you can crochet a carnation. You need to know crochet single crochet and double crochet stitches, and you should know crochet rounds. So you don't lose track of where you are as you're making your carnation, mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker. As you crochet each successive round, you double the number of stitches, which gives your carnation its characteristic wavy petals.

Instructions

1. Crocheted flowers come in all forms.

Crochet five chains and slip stitch to make a ring. Chain three for round one--this is the first double crochet stitch--then crochet 15 double crochet stitches into ring. Slip stitch into third chain of starting chain and put a stitch marker. (16 double crochet)

2. Use a crochet hook to make carnations.

Chain three as first double crochet, then double crochet in the joining stitch for round two. Make two double crochet stitches in each double crochet of round one all the way around. Join with slip stitch in third chain of starting chain. Move stitch marker to this stitch. (32 double crochet)

3. Chain three as first double crochet, then double crochet in the joining stitch for round three. Crochet two double crochet stitches in each double crochet all the way around, then join with a slip stitch in third chain of the starting chain three. Move stitch marker to this stitch. (64 double crochet)

4. Chain three as first double crochet for round four. Make a double crochet in the joining stitch, then two double crochet in each double crochet all the way around. Join with slip stitch in third chain of starting chain three, then move stitch marker to this stitch. (128 double crochet)

5. Make a single crochet in the joining stitch. Chain three and single crochet in first double crochet. Work this pattern to the end of this round: Chain three and make a single crochet in next double crochet. End with slip stitch in first single crochet.

6. Turn carnation to the wrong side and, using tapestry needle, thread yarn through the bottom of each double crochet of round three. Pull yarn snug to make base of carnation. Tie yarn off. Shape and bunch flower petals.
