Throw A Party For My 14th Birthday

Make invitations with colorful flowers to fit the theme of a summer party.

Up until now, your parents always planned your birthday parties. This year, they are letting you do it your way. Designing your own birthday party is a creative endeavor that also teaches you about planning and organization. A key to a successful party is developing a theme. Having a party theme will make it easier to develop a party where all aspects, from the invitations to the food, work together in harmony. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine a theme for your party. This could be something simple like "summer," or it could be something more specific like your favorite sport, movie or band. Other ideas for themes include fashion, super heroes, dance, outer space, cheer leading, the 80's and the Old West.

2. Find a location for your party. This might be your house or, if you are having a summer party, you might want to have it at a park or a pool. You could also reserve space at a restaurant or at an amusement park.

3. Develop a guest list. Keep in mind the limitations of space. Also, the more people you invite, the more expensive the party will be.

4. Create invitations that reflect your theme. For example, if you are having a music-themed party, you could make invitations that look like concert tickets or like backstage passes. For a summer party, include lots of bright colors. Include in the invitations your name, what age you are turning, the time and location of the party, the theme and any other special details. Do not pass out your invitations at school in front of people if it will make those who are not invited feel bad. Consider mailing the invitations or sending them electronically.

5. Decide on what snacks to serve and what kind of cake you want. Try to come up with snacks and cake that fit within your theme. For a pool party, for example, you could serve summer melons, sparkling citrus juice and have a cake decorated like a tropical beach scene or in the shape of a sun. For a music-theme party, your cake could be in the shape of a guitar or a grand piano.

6. Come up with games or crafts that fit your theme. For a movie-themed party, you might develop a scavenger hunt or a quiz game based on the story of the movie. For a music-themed party, you could play "Name That Tune," using clips of your favorite songs. Well-suited crafts for a fashion-theme party would be painting and stringing wood beaded bracelets and necklaces, and t-shirt decorating.

7. Decorate the space in accordance with your theme. For example, if you are having a sports-themed party, you could create large paper cut outs of athletes in action, use balloons with your favorite team's logo and use streamers using your favorite teams colors. For an 80's party you could create a wall collage, using cut outs from digital prints of 80's musicians and television stars, and fill the room with neon colored balloons and streamers.
