Luau Gifts For Kids

Luau party gifts can be given upon welcoming your guests or at the end of the party.

From lei's to tiki masks, luau gifts can be seen as a way to extend your generosity, thank your young guests, and as a means to add a new layer to party activities. In Hawaii, luaus are an opportunity to share food and gifts in a party setting. Your luau party gifts may be given upon welcoming the kids, as addition to party activities, or at the end of the party to thank the kids for coming. Does this Spark an idea?

Grass Skirts

Girls, and maybe even some boys, can enjoy wearing Hawaiian grass skirts during or after the party. Buy grass skirts at a local party store or create your own. The easiest way to create a grass skirt is to get a long piece of red, brown or green cotton cloth and cut it into thin strips, remembering not to cut it all the way and leave about an inch at the top to hold the skirt together. Create two ropes at each end of the skirt by cutting off about 5 inches from the top edge of the skirt, right above the strips, but keeping that border an inch wide.

Flower Hair Bands

Create flower-hairband luau gifts for girls by buying plain headbands and using super glue to attach artificial tropical flowers around the band. For alternative headbands try stringing real or artificial flowers into roughly a 22-inch string and tie the two ends into a knot. This size can be modified lower or higher in length depending on who is wearing it.

Leis

A lei is wreath of flowers used as a headband, a necklace or a wrist band and is a symbol of affection in Hawaiian culture. Create a long line of strewn tropical flowers, fresh or artificial, and make different leis for your young guests to take home. Leis are also sold at most party favor shops.

Straw Hats

Straw hats are fun and reminiscent of a hopping Hawaiian party. Buy straw hats at a local party supply store or discount store and give them away as luau gifts to everyone from children to adults.

Inflatable Beach Balls

Because most real-life luaus take place at the beach and ocean side, beach balls are a great addition to party festivities that kids will love as a gift. Buy a stash of inflatable beach balls and give them to guests to play with at, or after the party.

Tiki Mask

Tiki masks are also a great luau gift for kids, especially if they are part of an ensemble of other costume pieces such as grass skirts and leis. It is probably best to buy tiki masks at your local party store. If you are going for the homemade version, search the Internet for tiki mask designs, color them and attach onto cardboard and cut out as a gift.

Mixed Songs with Popular Luau Tunes

Though this gift is time consuming and can be costly, it is well worth it if your guests are older children and can appreciate the hard work. Websites that sell music, such as iTunes and Amazon.com have on hand many luau playlists. Pick one to your liking and download a mixed music CD or DVD to give as luau gifts.

Dried Nuts and Fruit Bag

Macadamia nuts, pineapple and coconuts are natural treats served at most luaus. Buy small plastic party bags to give out as luau party gifts. Place a teaspoon each of dried pineapple, dried coconut flakes and macadamia nuts into the bags and tie the ends with ribbon. For younger children consider just dried pineapples, remembering that some children may be allergic to coconut and nuts.
