Las Vegas Bartending Schools

Seveal Las Vegas bartending schools teach the fundamentals of mixology and drink service.

In the movie "Cocktail," Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown dazzled bar patrons by juggling liquor bottles, mixing multiple beverages simultaneously and rattling off booze-themed poetry. While they demonstrated the flair aspect of bartending, the nuts and bolts of the craft involves drink knowledge and preparing and serving cocktails, beers and spirits in a friendly, timely and safe manner. Prospective bartenders in Las Vegas can acquire these skills at a number of local bartending schools.

ABC Bartending School

The Las Vegas branch of this national chain offers prospective bartenders the option of a two-week or one-week accelerated curriculum. This course covers bartending fundamentals such as the use of proper glassware, beer and wine knowledge and the mastery of cocktail service and preparation. Students at the ABC Bartending School learn and prepare drinks on a daily basis. The curriculum also covers the business aspects of bartending, including cash control, inventory control, interview for bartending positions and the applicable liquor laws for the state of Nevada. This school provides job placement opportunities.

ACE Bartending Academy

The ACE Bartending Academy in Las Vegas is one of three schools run by this nationwide company. The ACE curriculum lasts 30 hours over ten days on a Monday-to-Friday schedule; upon completion, students receive a bartending certificate. The course's mixology component covers 200 cocktails, including the proper glassware, garnishment, preparation and service of these drinks. Twenty of the 30 hours of coursework focus upon learning drink recipes and preparation. Other aspects of the curriculum focus upon the manufacture of spirits, wines and beers, bartending etiquette and maintain and clean a bar and bar equipment.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The Food and Beverage Management Department of the Hospitality School of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, or UNLV offers bartender training. Prospective bartenders can enroll in the Bartending course FAB 190, which teaches the fundamentals of bartending, including mixology and the service of alcoholic beverages. Advanced courses, such as "Beers," "Old World Wines" and "Distilled Spirits and Liqueurs" focus upon the manufacture, identification, quality assessment and tasting of these beverages. Current bartenders who wish to pursue a degree in Bar Management can also take courses relevant to this career goal.

Techniques of Alcohol Management

The state of Nevada requires all working bartenders to complete a course in alcohol awareness. The Techniques of Alcohol Management school serves Las Vegas bartenders by providing this course and then giving each student a TAM card upon completion. This card certifies that bartenders have received training in recognizing intoxication, understanding the effects of alcohol on the body, spot fraudulent identification cards, applicable alcohol laws and liabilities and handle disputes with intoxicated patrons. Bartenders must re-certify every four years to keep working in Nevada.
