Make Glitter Letters

Glitter Letters on "Live with Regis and Kelly"

Graffiti may be the cool way to say it and spray it, but here's an alternative that doesn't come with jail time. Make a statement with glitter letters that satisfy your inner tagger and your need for bling!

I tried this for the first time during a holiday segment on "Live with Regis and Kelly" and loved the result; one read, "Hi Santa, Hi Rudolph!" on a Christmas-themed balloon wall (see link to related article in Resources below) and the other said, "I Resolve To Play" on a New Year's Eve-themed buffet table. I'm thinking it's my new favorite way to mark the party spot: "Hi Honey!" "BAR," "Welcome Karaoke Fans!"

Instructions

1. Think about what you want to write. Humor is the best way to go, but glitter letters are also a great way to mark things at a party: "COCKTAILS," "NIBBLES," "SWEETS," "PICK-UP LINE FORMS HERE"--ha!

2. Find the three-dimensional letters at a craft store or Google keywords "craft letters" to find them online. Paper Source carries them in their brick and mortar stores and online as well (see Resources below).

3. The letters are usually made from brown craft paper so you'll want to paint them the same color as the glitter you're using. Spray paint is the easiest, but you can use whatever paint you can get your hands on.

4. There are a couple of ways you can go when applying the glitter. First grab a box lid (I used the lid from those cardboard file boxes), then mask your painting area and paint the letters. Here are the two options: While the paint is still wet, place the letter in the box lid and sprinkle the glitter over the letters, or if you want to wait for the paint to dry before glittering...it's cool...just spray the letters with spray adhesive before glittering.

5. Apply the letters to the front of your buffet, or if applying to a wall, use blue painter's tape on the wall first (in the shape of the letter you are applying), then use double stick tape to apply the letters to the blue tape...so you don't peel the paint off your wall.
