Remove The Front Sight On An M&P 9mm

A dovetail front sight, similar to one on the M&P9

The Smith and Wesson M&P9 9mm pistol is a modern, polymer-framed handgun. It is known for reliability, accuracy, and ease of customization. The design of the M&P9 allows various parts such as grips and sights to be changed quickly and easily. Removing the front sight is an easy task that can be performed by anyone with a few basic tools, making it possible to replace a damaged sight or replace it with a different style. Glow-in-the-dark night sights and fast-tracking combat sights are popular upgrades.

Instructions

1. Field-strip the pistol according to the procedure in your Smith & Wesson owner's manual. Following the manufacturer's procedure is essential to ensure that you do this safely and correctly.

2. Clamp the pistol slide into your bench vise using a t-shirt or cloth rag as padding to ensure that you don't damage the finish on the slide. Clamp the slide upright, with the front sight area clear of the vise jaws.

3. Spray the front sight with penetrating lubricant, making sure you get lubricant into the dovetailed slot that holds the front sight in place. Let the lubricant sit and penetrate for around an hour.

4. Using the brass punch and hammer, drive the front sight sideways out of the pistol slide. The dovetail slot that secures the sight is designed to be uni-directional; the front sight must be driven out towards the right side of the pistol slide, towards the pistol's ejection port.
