There are a million things to do on Maui and almost as many ways to do them. But prices can add up quickly. Look around at different options to make your budget go further.
Instructions
1. Rent snorkeling gear and go to a local cove or beach instead of taking a snorkeling cruise. You can get maps that indicate good snorkeling spots right off the beach. Many places rent gear for less than $10 a week. Pick up a one-use, waterproof camera at the store, and you're set.
2. Book your activities in advance through activity centers. Many times activities are cheaper when you book ahead, and agencies often offer two-for-one food coupons. Beware of time-share presentations, which may take up a lot of your free time in exchange for reduced fares. Many activity agencies advertise "no time shares" and simply provide tickets.
3. Rent a car instead of taking a guided tour. You can save lots of money and see all the sights on your own schedule, moving on whenever you'd like. Many stores and stops have tour tapes that you can plug into your car's tape deck for a guided trip.
4. Look for free activity books and catalogs. They are available all over the island, in restaurants, hotels and shopping centers. They're full of ideas and information, and many even have coupons.
5. Decide which activities will require the most guidance, such as scuba diving, and book such activities through a tour or activity company. Do other activities on your own. Days at the beaches are free, and Maui has some of the best beaches around. Pack up the sunscreen and a picnic, rent a boogie board and enjoy an inexpensive day in the sun.
