Ideas For A Hog Roast

Set up a buffet style table where guests can help themselves.

A hog roast is an original idea for an outdoor party. The feast is a fantastic way to celebrate the first signs of warm weather and an excuse to gather your family and close friends. Marinating and cooking the pig are certainly the main things to plan for the roast, but there are other things you will want to consider to make this get together a success. By the end of your pig roast party, guests will be pleading with you to make it an annual affair. Does this Spark an idea?

Preparation

Sending out invitations for your party will prepare our guests for a pig roast since many of them may have never been to one. Request that they RSVP a few weeks ahead of time. This way you will know what size pig to order. As the numbers come in, pick up heavy duty paper plates and lots of thick napkins since things can get messy.

Side Dishes

If your guests are going to make pulled pork sandwiches, what better side to serve than hand cut and fried potato chips? Other sides that you may want to make are cole slaw, bean salad, baked beans and an assortment of grilled vegetables. You may want to make honey barbecue grilled chicken tenders or chicken kabobs for guests who may not eat pork. Prepare fruit salad as a sweet option for dessert. Other delicious options are pineapple upside down cake, lemon meringue and coconut cream pie.

Drinks

For a couple of nonalcoholic beverage options, serve fruity punch with sherbet or pitchers of fruit smoothies. For the adults in attendance, frozen pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris served in bright plastic cups with paper umbrellas, slices of fruit and colored straws are sure to have guests coming back for more.

Setting the Mood

An easy way to find decorations is to look for Hawaiian luau decor. The bright colored flowers, tiki torches, festive tablecloths or bamboo runners can help set the mood for your hog roast. For easy centerpieces, place fruits such as pineapples or bananas as decor or water-filled glass bowls with floating blooms. As guests arrive, greet them each with a cowboy hat or lei to wear during the party. Be sure to play some upbeat music in the background. It doesn't matter if it's country or reggae; just play songs that will make your guests smile.
