Plan A Hip Hop Eighties Party

Hip hop music revolved around rappers and DJs.

Hip hop music released in the 1980s focused mostly on party and pleasure-related topics. Classics including "Bust A Move" by Young MC and "Summertime" by Will Smith are based on relaxing and having a good time with friends. This makes for a great party theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pick a date to hold the party. Consider planning at least 3 weeks in advance to allow all aspects of the party to come together in time.

2. Create invitations to be sent either as digital e-vites, which can be e-mailed, or print invitations to be handed out in person or sent in the mail. Include within the invitation the location, directions, time and an RSVP number, if desired. State that the party will be an '80s hip hop music theme. Consider asking guests to dress up as their favorite '80s hip hop artist or wear typical '80s hip hop fashion, including shell-toe Adidas sneakers, multi-colored jackets and gold chain necklaces.

3. Plan the food and beverage menu to be served throughout the party. Assemble a list of foods and drinks that can be prepared in advance to allow limited effort in the kitchen right before the party begins. Create a shopping list so all items are accounted for, and provide menu items with hip hop-themed names including hammer time hamburgers, MC hot dogs or other creative titles.

4. Pick decorations to be used throughout the party. Cover the walls with butcher paper and let guests spray paint or tag the paper throughout the event to create an original '80s hip hop graffiti room. Purchase neon baseball caps from a party supply store for guests to graffiti their hip hop name across the front, which is not only a fun activity but a conversational starter between guests as well. Small items including plastic gold chain necklaces and inflatable boom boxes can be placed throughout the room for guests to take home afterward.

5. Choose music for the party. Create a playlist for a digital player, or burn a CD that includes '80s hip hop classics such as "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot, "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice and "Whoomp! There It Is" by Tag Team. There were a plethora of hip hop hits during the '80s, so consider adding at least 2 hours' worth of music on the playlist. Create a unique experience by playing the music videos in the background to truly get guests in the '80s vibe.

6. Pick activities for guests to participate in. Small groups at a time can take part in dance-offs trying their best to master the MC Hammer move, break dancing or even freestyling. Karaoke to '80s hip hop songs can add extra entertainment throughout the night, and group activities including musical chairs set to the tune of a Tupac or Notorious B.I.G. song allow guests to participate in healthy competition.
