Troubleshoot A Smith Corona Sd680

The computer has replaced the typewriter as the main word processor, but some people still favor the older technology.

With the advent of the computer and word-processing programs, the humble typewriter usually finds its place hidden away on a closet shelf or given away to charity. Some people still like the feeling that using a typewriter gives them when writing their correspondence. The Smith Corona SD680 typewriter was a popular model when new. It came with auto correction, auto return, spell check and even a small screen to see what you had typed before it went on the page. When the Smith Corona SD680 is malfunctioning, there are a few steps you can take to get it working again. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check the electrical cord. Verify that the outlet is functional and that there are no frays in the cord. Check where the cord is attached to the typewriter to make sure it is not loose.

2. Verify which key or key is sticking. Pry the key or keys up gently using a flat-head screwdriver. Look at the key bed. If there is dirt or food crumbs there, use aerosol air compressor to blow the dirt away or use a vacuum cleaner to remove the debris. Also check the key stem: If it is slightly bent, gently bend it straight using pliers. If not, add a drop of sewing machine oil to the stem. Replace any removed keys.

3. Observe the carriage glide. Type on a few keys to get the return to the far edge and add a drop of sewing machine oil to the glide. Press the return key and add a drop of oil to the other side. Continue typing a few strokes to get the oil to spread the length of the carriage glide.

4. Replace the ink ribbon cassette. Grasp the cassette on each side and lift straight up and out at the same time. Twist the gear wheel on the bottom of the cassette to rewind the ribbon. Set the cassette back in the carrier and press down. Replace the cassette if the ribbon has been used many times and is worn.

5. Remove the correcting tape cassette. Grasp the cassette by both sides and pull it toward you. Twist the gear wheel on the bottom of the cassette in the direction shown to rewind the ribbon. Replace the correcting cassette by pushing it gently back into place.

6. Clean the printwheel. Using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, gently clean the letters on the printwheel. Wipe with a clean cloth.
