Felted material
is stiff enough to form many differnet types of bags.
Once knitted material is felted, it can be turned into custom scarves and bags. Put together your felted bag, then advance your handmade project by embellishing it with decorative touches. Whether you use an appliqu technique, bead your bag or make the most of your vintage earring collection, your finished felted bag project will have all your friends and family longing for their own.
Instructions
1. Felted material can be cut into any shape.
Apply felted pieces to create a design. Cut out flowers, leaves, butterflies, ladybugs or anything else you can imagine from scrap felted material from past projects. Sew them onto the bag front or use textile glue to adhere them onto the felted bag.
2. Plan out a design before you begin embroidering on your felted bag
Sketch out a design, then transfer your idea by using embroidery thread and a satin stitch. Add some French knots for texture and interest.
3. Quickly transform your bag from plain to fancy with a beaded fringe.
Add beads. Use beaded fringe to add a designer touch to the edges of the bag or sew beads in a random pattern to add interest and sparkle to a felted bag.
4. Costume jewelry can add a vintage touch to your felted bag.
Use vintage earrings. Vintage earrings and costume jewelry feature colorful stones and traditional designs, like floral buds, animals or insects. Stick pierced earrings right through the felted bag then bend the post inside the bag with pliers to secure it. Snap off clip earring backs, and glue or sew them onto the bag's front surface.
5. Use richly textured yarn to make an eye-catching braid.
Braid decorative yarns together, including richly texture yarns and metallic threads. Tie off and sew the braided piece onto the bag to serve as a handle or top edge.
6. Buttons add colorful detail to your bag.
Empty out your button jar, and use a variety of colors, shapes and sizes of buttons to make a festive design on your felted bag. Sew in a random pattern over the front of the bag, and use a special large button to serve as a closure for the bag.
7. Quilt your felted bag. Cut shapes out of felted scrap fabric or a coordinating fabric to decorate the bag. Sandwich two matching shapes together, and sew them to form a pocket. Fill it with craft stuffing material, and stitch it shut. Once all your pieces are "quilted," sew or use textile glue to apply them to the front of the bag.
