Word An Invitation To A Luau Birthday Party

Bring the spirit of the Islands into the wording of your luau party invitation.

Luau parties are a fun way to celebrate a birthday, especially in the summer. Guests get a kick out of flaming Tiki torches, Hawaiian shirts and flower or kukui nut leis. Island flavors and fruity tropical drinks please the palate while hula music completes the atmosphere. But setting the mood for your luau party begins with your invitation. Keep the laid-back feel of Hawaii in mind and choose invitation wording that conveys that island attitude. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Say "Aloha!" This well-known word means both "hello" and "goodbye." Used at the beginning of the invitation, it immediately sets the tone for your luau.

2. Issue the invitation and specify the event. You can say something simple, like "Please join us for a luau to celebrate John's birthday," or use a fun line such as: "Put on your grass skirts and flower leis and help us celebrate John's birthday with a back-yard luau." If you want to add authenticity, write "Help us wish John Hau`oli la Hanau at his birthday luau.

3. Specify the time, place and date of the party. You can use a paragraph format or a list format to do this. If you like, use Hawaiian words to give information: "manawa" for time and date and "kauwahi" for place. Don't worry about translating. Most guests will figure it out if they see "manawa: June 10 at 7 p.m."

4. Tell guests what to expect in terms of food and drink. For example, if you are serving a full buffet, write: "Plan to enjoy a festive Hawaiian-style feast." If you are offering drinks and appetizers, write: "Munch island-inspired snacks and sip a fruity umbrella drink while you socialize with the birthday boy."

5. Write laid-back instructions for food contributions, gifts, attire and other situations, if necessary. Instead of "No gifts, please," say "Bring your limbo skills -- they're gift enough."

6. State whether guests should R.S.V.P. and give them a phone number or address to do so. End your invitation with the traditional Hawaiian word for thank you: "mahalo."
