You can create a Hawaiian feel using flowers.
During the teenage years, boys and girls become men and women. During this progression, they look forward to a chance to celebrate the passing of years with their friends. One birthday party theme for teenagers is a luau or Hawaiian theme. Hawaiian birthday parties can be simple or complex depending on the amount of time and money available. Does this Spark an idea?
Invitations
Although there are plenty of pre-made invitations that have Hawaiian detailing, you can make your own using heavy card stock. One simple design is to cut your card stock into a circle shape and color it to look like a beach ball. Or you could cut out surf boards or shirt shapes and decorate them with markers. The party information can then be written back of the card. If you have access to postcards that have tropical scenes, use these to write your party information. At the time you send your invitations, you can also send a raffia armband for male guests and a silk flower comb for female guests. You can find these at party supply stores and they can be worn by the guests at the party.
Decorations
If you are planning an outside party, use the outside plants and trees to accent your theme. Look for Hawaiian-themed party lights, such as fish or surfboards, and hang these in your trees and bushes. If you have access to a pool, plan the party around the pool area to give the feel of water. For inside parties, place inflatable palm trees around the room to add that tropical feel. Hang the party lights around an indoor room for accent. Create grass skirts out of green streamers and line the edge of tables. Buy silk leis to pass out to guests when they arrive. Place coconuts and Hawaiian flowers, like plumeria, around the party venue.
Food
The menu you choose can vary depending on the amount of money you want to spend. If you want to go all out, throw a traditional luau with a whole roasting pig. Other Hawaiian-themed dishes include poi, a traditional luau dish made of mashed up taro root, sweet potatoes, beef teriyaki, pineapple dishes and sweet and sour meatballs. If you want to go less extravagant, you can still keep that Hawaiian feel by serving chips and pineapple salsa. Also, tropical fruit salad is a good choice. For more of a meal, order a Hawaiian pizza from your favorite pizzeria.
Cake
The birthday cake can range from traditional sheet cakes to specialty cakes. Decorate a sheet cake to look like a beach and ocean using graham cracker crumbs as sand and blue frosting for waves. Or decorate the cake with silk flowers and a plastic hula girl. A pineapple upside down cake has a tropical feel. Or you can make individual chocolate lava cakes, which are chocolate cakes filled with molten chocolate. When they are cut open, the chocolate will ooze out like lava from a volcano.
