Luau parties bring an island feel and theme to your guests and location. Although this atmosphere is often enough to keep your attendees entertained, games and activities always enhance the party. Choose games and activities that share the luau theme and are sure to keep your guests in the island state of mind. Does this Spark an idea?
Musical Beach Towels
A take on musical chairs, musical beach towels gives this classic game an island twist. Put your beach towels in a circle, but lay out one less than towel than the number of participants. Play classic island music, such as tunes featuring the ukelele, and tell your players walk around the towel, mats or chairs. When the music stops, have the participants scramble to stand on towel. Whoever is left standing is out of the game. Continue the game until one person has finally claimed the last towel. Give the winner a luau-related prize, such as a miniature hula girl.
Pineapple Bowling
Pineapples are known as one of the gifts of Hawaii. Celebrate the sweet fruit by bowling in its honor. Set up a bowling alley in your party space by outlining a lane with tropical flowers or leis. Arrange pineapples as you would bowling pins at one end of the lane. Use a coconut or another small, heavy ball as your bowling ball. The guest who can knock down the most pineapples is the winner. Award your bowler with a lei or pineapples.
Make Your Own Leis
You can't have a proper luau party unless you have a lei-making activity. Either purchase real flowers, such as orchids, carnations, roses or daises, or obtain their artificial counterparts. Plan on using about 50 blooms per lei. Use thin string or dental floss---cut into 60-inch lengths---with needles attached to each strand. Work your needle through the centers of the flowers, and tie the ends of the string or floss together when your lei is complete. Bring out a bit of the competitive nature of your guests by turning this activity into a game. The winner could be the participant who makes a lei the fastest or creates the best-looking lei.
