Throw A Great Pool Party

Keep guests entertained at pool parties with an assortment of pool toys.

When it comes to casual warm-weather get-togethers, backyard pool parties provide the perfect mix of active entertainment and relaxing lounging to please any guest. However, it takes more than the swimming pool itself to guarantee a successful event. Offer an appropriate mix of food, drinks, games and amenities to keep guests comfortable and entertained until the sun goes down. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fill the ice chests with ice and bottled beverages to keep drinks cool throughout the party. Make sure to color-code or label one drinks cooler as alcoholic and one as non-alcoholic to ensure that designated drivers and children don't imbibe the wrong beverages. Be sure to have plenty of water on hand, either bottled in the coolers or in pitchers, to help guests stay hydrated.

2. Provide lounge chairs, beach umbrellas and towels to give swimmers a spot out of the sun to take a break as well as give guests who would rather relax in the shade a place to lounge. Keep a large supply of dry towels on hand for guests who forget to bring their own and to substitute for towels that have become too-waterlogged to be useful.

3. Set out a supply of water-resistant sunscreen in various levels of SPF and UV-protection levels for guests to use prior to taking a dip. Make sure to have one or two options designed specifically to protect the delicate skin of children for guests to use on their offspring. Remind guests to refresh their sunscreen at various intervals throughout the party.

4. Organize informal games in which guests can engage, both in and out of the water, with the beach balls, backyard game and assortment of pool toys. Start a water fight with water pistols and balloons with guests in the pool, or get guests overheated enough for a second dip with a casual lawn game, such as beach ball volleyball.

5. Present a buffet of finger foods on which guests can nibble throughout the event, such as fresh fruit, raw vegetables and dip or chips. Make sure to select provisions that can stand up to prolonged outdoor exposure, such as celery and carrots instead of loose-leaf salads.

6. Light up the grill a few hours into the party, when guests will have worked up an appetite. Grill an assortment of meats, such as hamburgers, chicken, fish and hot dogs, as well as a few veggie burgers, from which guests can choose. Create a self-service bar, stocked with the buns and condiments, near the finger food buffet for guests to assemble their own meal.

7. Set the fire pit ablaze as the party winds down for guests to get warm around before heading home. Pass out roasting sticks and marshmallows to any guest looking for an after-dinner sweet treat.
