Ideas On Make Your Own Halloween Costume For A Gothic Ragdoll

Use a traditional ragdoll to design a gothic ragdoll costume.

This Halloween, instead of dressing like a traditional ragdoll, such as Raggedy Ann, turn the ragdoll into something darker. Using dyes and makeup, create a gothic ragdoll costume. Making your own costume is economical and ensures a unique costume.

The Dress

Several options are available to you in regards to your dress. If you previously dressed up as a traditional ragdoll, modify the existing dress to be more gothic. A traditional ragdoll costume contains a empire waist dress with a short skirt and an apron. Dye the dress using fabric dyes. Choose a dark colored dye, such as a deep purple, dark red or black. Then, add some rips and tears around the hem of the dress to make it look distressed and worn. Another option is to purchase a used dress from a thrift store that looks like a ragdoll dress, dying the dress if necessary. A third option is to make a dress using a pattern from your local craft store. Choose dark colors for the fabric.

The Makeup

The makeup you use helps identify your intended costume. Start with a liquid foundation base in a pale or white shade. Create a pallid look by dusting your skin with a pale loose powder or baby powder. Add the powder to your neck and chest, as well. Keep the makeup light and soft looking. Use dark colored eye shadows, such as blues or grays. Line your top and bottom eyelid with a thick black line of eyeliner. When choosing lipstick, choose a color that matches your dress's color. For example, if your dress is dark green, use a dark green lipstick. Blood red and black are also appropriate. Draw a line out from the corner of your lips to create an extended smile using eyeliner or lip liner.

The Hair

When styling your hair, start by considering the color. Most gothic hairstyles avoid solid colors, unless the color is black. For example, dye your hair black with purple streaks. If you prefer not to dye your hair, purchase a wig to style. When styling your hair, use a traditional ragdoll style and add a goth spin to it. For example, put your hair in pigtails and then add height to the base of your hair. Use a comb to tease the hair at the roots or insert a comb handle at the roots and pull upward.

The Accessories

Accessories help round out the costume. Instead of wearing solid colored panty hose, choose a multi-colored tight. For example, wear a black and red striped stocking. Wear a pair of Mary Jane shoes, with or without a heel. Wear a pair of black gloves with the fingers cut off. Alternatively, skip the gloves and wear a pair of arm warmers. These are sleeves with no gloves on the end and do not attach to the sleeve of the dress. For jewelry, consider crosses or skull shaped jewelry.
