Instructions On Change The Ribbon On A Smith Corona Corsair Typewriter

The Smith Corona Corsair takes the Smith Corona 16360 ribbon or another compatible ribbon for this model. The ribbon set includes two reels that fit on spindles inside the old manual typewriters. The new ribbon passes from the left reel to the take-up spindle on the right. A fresh ribbon produces clean, clear text for your next document.

Instructions

1. Open the top cover of the Corsair typewriter to view the position of the left spindle and right spindle that will support the ribbon reel and take-up reel. If the old ribbon set is still in place, see how the ribbon feeds close to the roller bar or platen that holds the sheet of paper. The new ribbon reel replaces the left, empty reel; the new empty take-up reel replaces the right, full reel.

2. Remove the two old reels, one at a time if they are still in the typewriter. Carefully lift up the old ribbon from the ribbon vibrator that positions the ribbon in front of the paper. The ribbon vibrator is a small frame with slim vertical prongs that support the ribbon.

3. Line up the opening in the center of the new ribbon reel over top of the the left spindle. If the ribbon is a dual-color black and red ribbon, position the black inked strip on top. Press down on the ribbon reel to set it on the spindle.

4. Unwind the ribbon for approximately four inches. Insert the ribbon in the ribbon guide located close to the upper right of the left spindle. The ribbon guide has slim vertical columns. The ribbon passes between these columns.

5. Unwind enough length of ribbon to feed through the ribbon vibrator, located close to the roller bar or platen. Feed the ribbon behind the metal prongs.

6. Line up the opening in the center of the new take-up reel over the top of the right spindle. Press down on the reel to set it on this spindle.

7. Insert a small section of the ribbon in the second ribbon guide located close to the upper left of the right spindle. This second ribbon guide helps feed the ribbon onto the take-up reel.

8. Manually wind the take-up reel to pick up the slack and prevent the ribbon from sagging into the typewriter.

9. Close the top cover to minimize dust and debris in the typewriter parts.

10. Insert a sheet of paper. Test the ribbon by typing on the paper. The ribbon should feed smoothly from left to right from the full spool to the take-up spool.
