Play The Ukelele

Ukuleles Hanging On a Wall

The ukulele is a beautiful and simple instrument. It does not take very long to learn play, although more complex songs can obviously take greater time to learn. Most musicians consider the ukulele far easier to learn than the guitar. The instrument makes beautiful music and if you follow these steps you should pick up on play it rather quickly.

Instructions

1. Hold the ukulele under your right arm. You will be holding it within the crook of your right elbow.

2. Take your left hand and curl it around the "neck" of the ukulele, which is the slender piece where the strings run along to the tuning end of the instrument.

3. Place your fingers on the chord from which you wish to begin playing. Typically the ring finger on your left hand is the finger people use; place your finger on the chord that the song you wish to play calls for.

4. The chords, based off of tuning, should either be G,C,E,A, or A,D,F#,B,. The C-chord is most often used and is located on the first string your hand will encounter when it is curled around the neck of the ukulele

5. Once you have placed your finger on the chord you will begin strumming all of the strings with your right hand. Players typically use their hands to play the ukulele rather than a pick. Make sure all of the strings are hit at virtually the same time by strumming quickly. Players typically use their right thumb to strum. At this point you are playing the ukulele.

6. You will need to learn which chords are needed for each song so that you can move your left hand in tune with the music. This takes practice but it is not difficult to pick up on. Many songs only need one chord, or two at most.
