Costume ideas for girls and boys of all ages

1. Winnie the PoohBuy a hooded, Hanes-style sweatsuit in yellow or mustard, making sure that the sweatshirt is one size bigger. Buy a red Hanes T-shirt in the correct size, cutting a half circle shape out of the hem in the front so it rides up over the "belly."Take a piece of yellow felt and fold it in half. Draw two round ear shapes on the felt, making sure that the straight "bottom" of the ears are on the fold. Make sure that they aren't so big that they will flop over, and not so small that you can't stuff them with cotton. On a piece of pink felt, cut out two inner ears slightly smaller than the ears. Hot glue the inner ears to your cut out yellow ears. Sew or hot glue the ears together, taking care to leave a small hole. Stuff the hole with cotton and glue shut.Sew the ears to the top of the sweatshirt hood from the inside, making sure they are positioned correctly.Glue a large piece of felt to the belly area inside of the sweatshirt, leaving a hole large enough to stuff full of newspaper, tissue, whatever you can find to make a belly. When finished stuffing, glue open edge down to the sweatshirt.Put on the sweatsuit bottom and top and the t-shirt over that. For an extra touch, carry a yellow sandbucket with the word, "Hunny" written on it in permanent marker for trick-or-treating. Paint the tip of your nose black with eyeliner.

2. CinderellaBuy a plain, light-blue or pink floor-length nylon nightgown. You can cut the sleeves and round the neck, depending on the style of the gown.Buy one-half yard to one yard of white tulle.Find an old, thin leather belt that fits your waist and can be ruined for the costume, preferably in a light color, or spray-paint it white if need be.Fold the tulle in half lengthwise, doubling it, and mark your waist size starting 6 inches down along the fold. Now draw half a heart on the folded tulle with a light marker, making sure that you start and end the half heart on the fold where your marked lines begin and end. Cut out the shape, unfold and cut in half along the fold line. Two pieces should measure, on their straight edges, the same length as your waist when placed side by side. One piece at a time, fold straight edges of the tulle 1/4 inch over the of the belt, with the arches of the heart ending in the front of the belt. You will need to start one piece about a half-inch from the buckle and the other the same distance from the hole that you use on the belt.. Hot-glue all the pieces on top of each other, even on both sides, making a belt with tulle attached for the peplum. Put on the nightgown and attach the "belt" to your waist. Fluff out the tulle. You can either cut the leather end off the belt or try to tuck it under the tulle.Optional accesories: blue headband, opera gloves found in any fabric shop, fancy slippers or pumps, black ribbon around neck.

3. Captain Jack SparrowPirate hats and swords can be had for cheap in any costume shop. Buy black yarn, cut in 16-inch, 12-inch and 18-inch bunches, tie with a rubber band and braid or twist into long ropes. You can even put beads on some of the strands.Hot-glue them around the inside of the hat to make hair.Buy an oversized man's white dress shirt.Cut a piece of white felt long enough to go from your neck to the bottom of your sternum. Poke a hole in the top and run a string through to tie it around your collar.Buy 2 yards of 5-inch-wide white lace and overlap it across the felt, hot-glueing as you go, back and forth, making a lacy cravat.Hot-glue remaining lace onto the cuffs of the shirt, overlapping several pieces and stopping short if your hands can't get through the cuffs without unbuttoning.Buy enough dark brown felt to make "boots." Wrap the felt around your leg, measuring the width and marking it. Make sure you'll have ample room to slip them on over your pants -- you don't want them tight. Cut to fit and hot-glue a seam up the back. Fold over the top about 5 inches. Now sew 1/4-inch elastic to each side of the "boot," making a stirrup. Slip them on over your brown shoes and black jeans.Put on your pirate shirt and a man's black vest, if you have one. Tie some scarves around your waist. You can ring your eyes in thick eyeliner, draw on a fake goatee and walk with a swagger all night. Douse yourself in a little rum, too!
