Make Logos In The Gimp

Make your own logo.

Any business should have its own logo. But if you are just starting out, you may want to avoid the expense of hiring a professional graphic artist to create a logo for you. Consider creating a logo yourself. This does not mean you will have to purchase an expensive graphics program. Rather, the freeware program GIMP has many of the same powerful tools, filters and functions of the big boys, but at no cost. In addition, creating your own log in GIMP is a relatively quick and painless process.

Instructions

1. Sketch out ideas for your logo on paper before you start working in GIMP. Decide whether you want to have only a shape graphic or text or both. Also, decide whether you want to include an image of some sort, such as your own face.

2. Load the image that you want to use in your logo onto your computer. You can do this by transferring it from a digital camera or SD card, or you can just use a scanner to bring in a copy of a printed image.

3. Open GIMP. Select "File" from the menu and click "New." In the dialog that pops up, enter the pixel width and height what you want for your image. Set the resolution at 300 if the logo is going to be printed. Click "OK."

4. Click on the "New Layer" icon at the bottom of the "Layers" panel. Select the "Path" tool from the toolbar and use it to draw in the outer shape of your graphic. Change the "Foreground" color to the color that you want for the graphic and use the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill the selection.

5. Use the "Path" tool to create small selections inside the main graphic that can then be deleted to form holes, or filled with other colors to add detail.

6. Select the "Text" tool and type in the text you want for your graphic.

7. Select "File" and click "Open as Layers." In the dialog that pops up, browse to the image that you want to use in the logo and open it. Use the "Scale" and "Move" tools to place the image where you want it in the logo.

8. Select "File" and click "Save." In the dialog, name your file and save it as a JPEG.
