A backyard BBQ is a great way to celebrate a new baby's impending arrival. A BBQ is not a traditional baby shower, making it a great way to celebrate a second or third baby. Guests will probably be anticipating a run-of-the-mill baby shower---creative invitations made with your favorite photo software are the best way to let them know to expect an nontraditional affair. Does this Spark an idea?
Picture of a Grill
Create the cover of your invitation.Take a picture of your own grill or one of your friends. Crop it and give it a pink or blue border if you know the gender of the baby. Add a text box to the photo.
You can write anything you want in the text box but here are some ideas: "Daddy's Little Grill Is Coming Soon, Celebrate With Us" (for a baby girl) and "Bun In The Oven, Burgers On The Grill."
The inside of the invitation should include all of the normal information, such as the date, place and time. Include registry information as well. Be sure to make it clear that it's a BBQ. If the entire family is invited rather than just ladies, make that clear as well.
Burgers, Bibs, and Babies
Purchase some cheap, plain white baby bibs from the craft store. They are inexpensive and usually come in a bulk package. You can purchase bibs that have pink or blue edging if you know the gender of the baby.
Using a word-processing program, type up the baby shower information. Include a catchy heading that indicated that this BBQ is also a baby shower. For example, "Come join us for our final BBQ before baby arrives." Include registry information so that guests realize it's a baby shower and a barbecue all in one.
After creating the text of your invitation, print on heavy card stock. Cut the text boxes and attach to the bibs. You can use diaper pins or simply use heavy thread and sew the card stock to the bib with a stitch in each corner.
Formal Affair ... Or Not
Make the cover of your invitation look like a formal wedding invitation. Use a pretty pink or blue color for the text and a fancy font. The wording should say something like, "You Are Cordially Invited to a Traditional Baby Shower While We Await the Joyous Arrival of A Precious New Life. Tea and scones to be served."
On the first line of the inside of the invitation simply write, "Yeah, right!" Then add the information about the actual party. Use a font for the inside that looks like handwriting. Include the fact that it's a backyard BBQ, and make it clear who is invited (husbands, kids, just women).
