Transform stacks of colorful paper into homemade Hawaiian decorations.
Hawaiian parties do not have to carry an extravagant price tag. Create your own party decorations with common household items and inexpensive products. Guests will enjoy your ingenuity and can even help participate in the decorating. Let them craft items to use as decorations during the party, and then send several items home with each guest for an easy clean-up!
Hawaiian Party Invitations
Cut out a Hawaiian-themed object from card stock to use as your invitation. Use a surfboard shape, flip-flop, palm tree or pineapple. Color the design, and write the party details on the shape. Put in an envelope to mail, or hand-deliver to your guests.
You can also use a pair of actual inexpensive flip-flops as the invitation. Attach the party details to the shoe with a ribbon or glue directly on the sandal.
Hawaiian Party Tiki Candles
Tiki god statues, masks and candles can be purchased from specialty shops, but with a little creativity and basic supplies you can make your own. Cut open brown paper bags and cut to fit around a glass candle holder. Design intimidating tiki god faces, and then cut out the eyes and mouth. Tape around the glass candle holder for an inexpensive decoration. Find inspiration for your tiki gods from the Mainlander Mega Tiki store link in the resource section.
Hawaiian Flowers
Make giant tissue paper flowers to decorate your Hawaiian party. Purchase multi-colored tissue paper sheets and pipe cleaners. Stack four sheets on top of each other. Fold tissue paper back and forth into 1-inch folds. Cut the ends of the 1 x 6-inch folded piece to round the corners. Tightly twist a pipe cleaner around the center. Fan the tissue paper, and then separate layers to create flowers. Place on a dowel, hang from the ceiling or place around the party area.
Homemade Hawaiian Leis
Make your own leis to hand out the party guests, and use them to decorate. Set out extra supplies for guests to make their own. You will need yarn, colorful plastic straws and colored paper. Cut the straws into 1-inch pieces, and cut flower shapes from the paper. Poke a hole in the center of each flower shape and then string the lei. Alternate stringing straw sections and flowers shapes onto the yarn. Tie the ends of the yarn together when it is as full as you like.
