Make Hawaiian Bracelets for Children
A child can celebrate his or her birthday with a luau-themed party. Children can enjoy making flower lei bracelets as a craft project, wear them during the party and take them home as party favors. Prepare the artificial flowers and cut up the straws the day before and have them ready with the other materials on a craft table for when the guests arrive.
Instructions
1. Create a template for the flowers by drawing a simple flower shape with pencil on a 2x2 inch square of cardboard. Cut around your pencil marks to cut out the flower template.
2. Fold a sheet of construction paper accordion style, folding 2 inches each time, until you reach the end of the paper. Cut off the extra strip of paper that does not reach 2 inches.
3. Fold again, starting from a short end, folding 2 inches accordion style to the end of the paper. Cut off excess. You should have a 2x2 inch square of folded paper.
4. Place flower template on top of folded square and trace around template.
5. Punch a hole though the center of the flower marked on the folded paper. Cut out layers of flowers along your pencil marks.
6. Repeat steps two through five to make as many flowers as you require.
7. Cut straws into 1-inch lengths. Prepare as many straw pieces as you have flowers.
8. Cut a length of string to fit around a child's wrist, leaving 6 extra inches for tying.
9. Tape a small strip of tape perpendicular to the string 3 inches from one end of the string. This will be removed later, but will keep the flowers and straws from slipping off while stringing the bracelet.
10. String the flowers and straws onto the bracelet, alternating flowers and straws until 3 inches of string remain.
11. Remove tape from step nine and tie tails together in a tight double knot. Cut off excess string.
