Spend Four Perfect Days On Oahu

Waikiki Beach is known as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Step onto the island of Oahu, and you have entered one of the world's most beautiful and romantic of places. The very word conjures visions of pristine, aquamarine water; gigantic rolling waves; and gentle ocean breezes. Oh yes, and surfers. Though all that is true, it only tells part of Oahu's story. Resist your temptation to spend all your time on Oahu's stunning beaches. There is so much more you don't want to miss.

Instructions

1. Plan to spend a day at the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you will be immersed in Hawaiian culture. While there will be many opportunities to learn from the native guides about the diverse lifestyles of the eight island cultures, go ahead and join the hands-on activities: learn cut a coconut, weave a basket and make a grass skirt. That evening, answer the call of the conch shell for an authentic luau and evening show featuring traditional Polynesian songs and dances.

2. You'll find treasures hiking in Oahu.

Step into history at Pearl Harbor. Though you know the story of Pearl Harbor, it'll have a different meaning after you gaze at the sunken USS Arizona, knowing that the remains of its crew are still aboard. Next, visit the Bowfin Submarine, known as the Pearl Harbor Avenger, and honor those from World War II who are buried at the cemetery at Punchbowl. End with a tour of the USS Missouri Battleship and the Mighty Mo, where the surrender plaque commemorates World War II's end.

3. Exotic flowers abound in Oahu.

Experience the might of the Pacific. Head to the North Shore's Haleiwa Beach and expect to be mesmerized --- and maybe a little frightened --- when you feel the beach vibrating as 20- to 30-foot waves gather, then surge to the shore. If it's a calm day, try some surfing yourself. If you've never surfed, you can take lessons. If that's too much, spread out your towel and let others get all the exercise

4. Head to Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, where you'll experience some of the most amazing snorkeling of your life. In these crystal-clear waters, the fish will swim right beside you. Next, sign on to swim with the dolphins. Though you won't get to touch the dolphins (they'll be 1 to 20 feet away), you will be cavorting among them. That evening, join the locals for a movie right on the beach. You'll be treated to a stage show, then a movie at sunset.

5. Drive to Diamond Head. Though you'll have to do some walking, it is more than worth the breathtaking vistas from the top. Then take in another of the island's most amazing wonders, the Halona Blowhole. This natural phenomenon is formed by molten lava tubes from volcanic eruptions. The lava tubes extend into the ocean and, when the surf is right, the blowhole shoots water up to 30 feet in the air.

6. Do a laua --- it's a must, and Germaine's Luau is touted by many to be the best. You'll see one of the most impressive displays of dance from Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand and Hawaii. The Samoan Fire-knife dance, known as the "Tooth of Death," is an unparalleled display of agility and finesse. Of course, you can't go to Hawaii without seeing the hula. You'll end the evening feasting on an all-you-can-eat buffet featuring traditional Island dishes as well as continental fare.
