Make A Wine Cork Name Tag

Turning used wine corks in to name tag displays is an special way to display guest names.

Crafting or creating name tags for a party, dinner gathering or simply a get-together can be as simple as using note cards with names written across the front. However, if you want to enhance the name tags used for decorating a table or area, employing a unique base material is one way to set your tags apart from the rest. Transforming used wine corks into name tags is a simple, inexpensive and eye-catching option to let guests know where to sit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Wash and dry the wine corks by soaking in a bucket filled with warm water and liquid dish detergent. Allow the corks to soak for at least one hour to remove wine residue and odor. Lay all corks out on paper towels to dry. Place in direct sunlight or in a warm spot to help facilitate the drying process.

2. Wear a pair of heavy duty gloves, such as construction or work gloves, to protect your hands. Lay a cork horizontally on a flat surface. Grasp the cork with one hand and run a sharp knife through the top center of it to create a cut spanning the length of the cork. This is the holder for the name cards you will make next.

3. Create a flat surface along the bottom of each cork to prevent the corks from rolling once placed on a table. Score the underside of each cork, the bottom portion opposite the name tag holder slit, by making a series of diagonal slices in to the cork to create a textured bottom. Go back over the cuts in the opposite direction, creating a crosshatch pattern which will help prevent the cork from moving.

4. Measure the length of the wine cork to determine the rough length you will cut your cardboard to make the name tags. Cut the cardboard into rectangular shapes, based upon the measurement. Make the name tag two inches high to allow enough room to write guest names. Hand write the names using a calligraphy pen or permanent marker. Enhance the look of the name tag by adding glitter, stickers, glued-on rhinestones or other embellishments that match the rest of your event theme.

5. Gently push the finished cardboard name tag into the slot at the top of the wine cork. Put each cork at the place setting for each guest.
