Word Humorous Birthday Invitations

The subject's age, likes/dislikes, obsessions and political views can be inspiration for invitations.

Everyone's perception of humor is different, that's why you find so many kinds of comedians--from slapstick to dryly sarcastic, conservative to liberal, and soft-spoken to wild. Before you write your funny birthday invitations, you need to determine what you think is funny. Are you a punmaster who enjoys wordplay, or do you like more subtle, intellectual humor? What kinds of greeting cards are you drawn to? Go to a greeting card store or shop around online to see what kind of humor catches your eye. Then, you can move forward. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Know your audience. In this case, the audience are your birthday party guests. Are they liberal enough to find raunchy humor funny? Or, would they think something more innocent is funny?

2. Know the birthday boy/girl. If it's you, you can take more liberties, since your own sense of humor is the limit. If it's a loved one, you'll need to be careful not to offend--keeping a relationship is far more important than having a few laughs over an offensive one-liner.

3. Use a funny quotation from a favorite comedian. It should be relevant to the person who is having a birthday party--perhaps it's a funny political quote, and the birthday person is a die-hard Republican. Or maybe a comedian once said something amusing about the age your birthday celebrant is turning.

4. Experiment with visual humor. Can you edit a photo of the birthday boy/girl doing or wearing something ridiculous? Let the funny image inspire you, and write a short caption underneath it relevant to both the picture and the birthday person.

5. Play with rhyme by brainstorming different ways to say common things. For example, instead of "forty," think "twenty times two." If your rhyming sounds stilted or forced, throw it out--your writing will much funnier if it sounds natural.

6. Use a party theme as a basis for humor. A spy party for someone who loves James Bond, an 80s party for someone who was a teen in the 80s or a luau all lend ideas to clever invitations.
