Kid Luau Party Ideas

Serve drinks in coconut cups at a luau party.

Regardless of the season, create a tropical oasis for kids by throwing a luau-themed party. Decorations, games and even the menu can be customized to fit the theme and make guests feel as if they are on a Hawaiian island. Does this Spark an idea?

Lei Invitations

In Hawaii, leis are a symbol of welcome and you can use them as a way of inviting guests to your luau party. Purchase faux leis from a party supply store. Cut out pieces of paper in a palm tree shape and print the details of the party on the paper. Attach the palm trees to the leis and either hand deliver them or place them in large envelopes and mail them out.

Decorations

Use decorations to turn the party area into a Hawaiian paradise. Place fake palm trees around the area or blow up and print out images of palm trees and hang them on the walls. Blown up images of Hawaiian beaches are another ideal wall decoration. For a tablecloth, use fish netting and create a centerpiece by filling a bucket with shells. String colored lights around the area. A sandbox gives the space even more of a beachy feeling and is a fun place for kids to play.

Hawaiian Menu

Create a menu of Hawaiian foods that are kid friendly. Ham and pineapple are two staples in Hawaiian cuisine. Create skewers of that feature both of these foods. Serve a fruit salad that include shredded coconut, cherries, bananas, oranges and pineapple. Kids enjoy pizza. Make it Hawaiian by adding pineapple. Serve fruit smoothies in coconut cups with umbrellas.

Games

Games are a fun way to keep kids occupied and provide socialization. At this party, include games that fit the luau theme.

Island Hopping:

Fashion islands out of brown or green construction paper and tape them to floor about two to three feet away from one another. Kids have to try to hop from island to island. If they miss an island, they are disqualified from the game. The last person standing wins.

Pin the Coconut on the Palm Tree:

This game is played just like Pin the tail on the Donkey, but the donkey and tail are replaced with a palm tree and a coconut. Print out an image of a palm tree and hang it on the wall. Create coconuts by cutting circles out of brown construction paper and placing a piece of tape on the back of each one. With coconut in hand, kids are blindfolded, spun around three times and pointed in the direction of the palm tree. The child to place her coconut closest to the top of the palm tree wins the game.
