Kids' Hawaiian Luau Party Ideas

Kids can have just as much fun as adults at a Hawaiian luau party.

A Hawaiian luau, with its tropical flowers, tiki lanterns, fruit dishes and frosty drinks, is always fun for adults. But it can also be an ideal party for kids, particularly during the summer. Choose tropical decorations that kids will love, get them involved in the food preparations, and plan a few games with a luau theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorations

Make your luau just for kids by putting a twist on the decorations. For younger kids, try a cartoon luau theme, such as SpongeBob Luau or Dora Explores Hawaii. For older kids, choose an iconic Hawaiian or luau object, such as a surfboard or flip-flops, and base the decorations on that.

Food

Let the kids have a hand in their own food. Start with a table spread with a variety of fruits and juices, including pineapple, coconut, strawberries and bananas. Give the children bowls and have them move around the table, choosing the fruits they want. One by one, help them add juice and the fruit, along with a scoop of ice cream to a blender. Push start and blend. For the meal, have the kids make kabobs of cubed ham, diced pineapple and cherries and grill.

Games

Every party needs activities. Purchase several Hawaiian tourist- and luau-related objects, such as grass skirts, leis, Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts. Divide the objects into two piles and separate the kids into two teams. The teams must race, one at a time, to fully dress in the costume--on top of their clothes--and then undress and let the next team member go. The first team to finish wins. Another fun game is a limbo contest, but make it more challenging by giving each kid a beach ball to dribble as he limbos under the pole.
