Bright colors, tropical scenery, surfboards and plenty of sunshine are just a few of the possibilities for visual themes to include on a luau bulletin board. Make a luau-themed bulletin board for a classroom display or to use at home to keep track of your family's obligations.
Background
Cover the top third of the bulletin board with sky blue paper, and cover the middle third with aqua-colored paper to look like the ocean. Draw in waves on the aqua paper with white chalk. Rip the top edge of beige sand-colored paper to give it an uneven look. Overlap this paper slightly with the aqua paper to cover the bottom third of the bulletin board.
Borders
Use leis made with synthetic flowers to create a decorative multicolored border around the bulletin board. Snip each lei in one spot, and, starting in the lower left corner and working up and around, staple the lei along the edge of the bulletin board. Stop at the lower right corner. Cut a grass skirt so it lies flat, and staple the top of the skirt along the bottom edge of the bulletin board. This covers the wall space under the bulletin board, so trim the grass skirt if it is too long and blocks other wall decorations.
Accessories
Cut surfboard shapes from bright colors of paper, and write section headings on the surfboards. Cut a circle of yellow paper to use as the sun, and if desired, cut strips of yellow paper and staple them to the bulletin board as rays of sunlight. Use brown and green paper to make a palm tree to attach to the board near one of the sides.
Wording
If the bulletin board is used to welcome people to an area, use the word "Aloha" in the heading, which is the Hawaiian word for both "hello" and "goodbye." A birthday bulletin board can use the heading "Special Surf-days" and can include each name and birthday on a surfboard-shaped cutout. Other words and phrases to incorporate into the luau bulletin board include "surf's up," "hang ten," "reef," "tiki," "cabana," "tropics" and "paradise."
