Unlock A Nextel Cell Phone

Nextel Sprint is one of the largest mobile phone service providers in North America. All new Nextel phones manufactured by Motorola and RIM (Research In Motion) come unlocked automatically. In 2007, as part of a settlement in a class action lawsuit, Nextel Sprint agreed to provide unlock codes for customers who may want to switch providers before the end of a contract term. Older phones may still need to be unlocked to accommodate this ruling.

Instructions

1. Track down your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number. Depending on the age of the phone, this can be found either behind the battery or by typing in *#06# in the keypad (for newer models). This will cause the IMEI number to pop up on screen. Jot down this number.

2. Locate the make and model of phone (found behind the battery on all models). This will be needed for activating a new SIM card.

3. Contact Nextel customer service at 1-800-639-6111.

Ask for the Unlock Code for the phone you wish to unlock. Provide the phone's IMEI number as well as the make and model of the phone.

4. Turn off the existing Nextel cell phone and replace the existing SIM with the new SIM card. Turn on the phone again.

5. Enter the Unlock Code obtained from Nextel at the prompt. Depending on the phone model, the prompt could say "Enter Unlock Code" or "Enter Subsidiary Code." After entering the correct Unlock Code, you will be able to begin using the new SIM card.
