Plan fun food and drinks for a luau party.
Luaus are traditional parties thrown in Hawaii, but they can be a fun way to spend an evening with your friends and family, or to celebrate a milestone. When you are planning a luau, an important aspect of the evening is the food and drinks. Choose items that remind a person of Hawaii, such as things made with tropical fruits. Does this Spark an idea?
Savory Food
Serve some savory dishes at your luau. For example, create a Hawaiian-style salsa by combining diced pineapple, red onion, red peppers, cilantro, lime peel and hot peppers. Pork is a common meat that people eat at Hawaiian luaus. If you have the capability to roast a whole suckling pig, do that. Otherwise, consider serving pork loin marinated in a tropical fruit marinade or a teriyaki marinade. Seafood is also a common dish served at luaus, so consider serving simply grilled fish topped with a tropical fruit salsa made with pineapples, mangos and citrus.
Sweet Food
No party is complete without some sweet items on the menu. Start by serving chunks of all kinds of fruits in a hollowed-out pineapple rind. Bake cupcakes and frost them with a bright color that coordinates with the rest of your party. Then, place a drink umbrella on a toothpick in the top of each cupcake. Take inspiration from the volcanoes of Hawaii by making a cake that looks like a volcano. Place a tropical fruit filling between the cake's layers.
Nonalcoholic Drinks
It's always a good idea to serve nonalcoholic drinks at a party. Children and people who do not drink alcohol should have an option other than water or soft drinks. Serve a punch made with pineapples, mangoes and ginger ale. Another idea is to make a virgin rum punch by combining equal amounts of orange juice, guava juice, pineapple juice and ginger ale in a pitcher. Figure out what 1/8 of the total amount of the liquid would be. Add that much grenadine. For example, if you added 1 cup each of the first four ingredients, you would add 1/2 cup of grenadine. Serve over ice.
Alcoholic Drinks
Prepare some tropical alcoholic drinks for the adults at the party. For example, prepare your guests mai tais by combining an ounce each of light rum, dark rum and orange curacao. Add a 1/2 oz. of orange juice, a dash of orange syrup and a dash of simple syrup. Chill over ice in a cocktail shaker and serve. Use a blender to create all sorts of frozen drinks, such as daiquiris, margaritas and pina coladas.
