Make Hula Costumes For A Luau

Luaus are the ultimate pool party. Nothing says luau like a beautiful hula costume. These costumes are as varied as the imagination and very easy to make. The kids may want to join in to make these simple hula dancer costumes. Follow these steps to learn more. Does this Spark an idea?

Make a Newspaper Hula Costume


1. Gather several sheets of old newspaper.


2. Use markers, paint, crayons, glitter and your imagination to decorate the newspaper in beautiful Hawaiian colors and patterns.


3. Wrap several sheets of the newspaper around the hula dancer.


4. Use tape down the back of the skirt to hold it together.


5. Cut the newspaper in long strips from the bottom to near the top of the hula dancer skirt to make it look like a flowing grass skirt.


6. Leave enough uncut newspaper at the top of the skirt to prevent tearing.


7. Reinforce the waistband of the hula costume by gluing material or light cardboard to the inside of the hula dancer's skirt.


8. Wear a bright bikini top or tank top with your beautiful paper hula dancer skirt.


Make a Crepe Paper Hula Costume


9. Cut long strips of crepe paper in the color of your choice or use several different colors.


10. Find an old belt to use for the waistband of the hula skirt.


11. Tape the crepe paper strips to the back side of the belt and drape over the belt to make your hula dancer costume.


12. Wear a bikini or full-piece bathing suit.


13. Buckle the belt around the waist making sure the crepe paper covers the belt to hide it from view.


14. Wear a flower in your hair and a Hawaiian lei around your neck to look like a real hula dancer.
