Luau Anniversary Party Ideas

Consider hiring a hula dance troupe to perform.

Luau parties are particularly fun for guests because attending a luau is like taking a miniature Hawaiian vacation. Whether the celebrating couple met, lived in or vacationed in Hawaii, or if they just like the idea of a luau anniversary party, draw party planning inspiration from the colorful and diverse culture and cuisine of Hawaii. Does this Spark an idea?

Invitation Favors

Instead of buying vintage postcards, you can edit a contemporary photo to look vintage.

Send desired guests simple party invitations printed on recycled brown cardstock, but add a special touch: tuck in a vintage Hawaiian postcard. Such postcards can be purchased relatively inexpensively on the Internet and make lovely "advance party favors." They can be framed and hung up like a piece of artwork. If possible, find vintage postcards depicting luaus or from the time period when the couple whose anniversary is being celebrated first met.

Tropical Food and Drinks

A coconut roll cake would also be appropriate for dessert.

Serve your guests a tropical feast inspired by the rich culture and history of Hawaii. Assemble a finger-food feast featuring Chinese-style barbecued pork and pineapple in Hawaiian sweet buns, papaya and avocado salad, and coconut-lime shrimp skewers. Don't forget appropriate beverages--such as blue Hawaiians, pina coladas and mai tais--and something sweet for dessert, such as coconut cream cake garnished with slices of lime. For specific recipes, visit the article "Easy Luau Party" on the sunset.com website as well as the article "Hawaiian Luau Theme Party" on the celebrations.com website (see Resources).

Quiz with Prizes

Organize a quiz game to commemorate the couple's courtship, relationship and anniversary--and test guests' memories in the process. Well before the party, make a list of facts about the couple, starting with easier questions like maiden names and birthplaces and progressing to difficult questions like exact wedding date, honeymoon location and full names and birth dates of any children. Assign points to each question based on difficulty. At the party, appoint someone (not the couple) to read the questions and keep track of how many points each guest gets. The couple can punctuate the quiz with funny or sweet anecdotes about their relationship. Award the winner a luau-appropriate prize, such as a flower lei and a vanilla-scented candle or a selection of Hawaiian-grown coffees.
