Cupcakes are sometimes easier to serve at a party than a traditional cake. Party planners can use cupcakes to accentuate the theme of any party and even turn them into a table centerpiece. Cupcake makers can prepare the sweet treats as individual servings or arrange them together to make a single image. Does this Spark an idea?
Edible Frosting Image Cupcakes
Add the image of a favorite actress, pop star, race car or musical instrument to each cupcake. Prepare the batch of cupcakes and spread a smooth layer of buttercream icing on each. Have images of the favorite person or image transferred onto edible frosting sheets. Make the image the same size, or slightly smaller, than the iced cupcake top. Transfer one frosting image onto each cupcake. Serve the cupcakes as they are or create decorative frames around the images with icing, a pastry bag and star icing tip.
Figurine Decorated Cupcakes
For common themes, consider decorating cupcakes with figurines to tie them into the theme. Prepare the cupcakes and spread a thick layer of icing on each. Use the same figurine for each cupcake or use different items or colors. For example, for jewelry-themed cupcakes, decorate the cupcakes with candy rings, necklaces and bracelets. Place a plastic princess figurine on top of each cupcake for a princess-themed party. For sport-themed cupcakes, find miniature-size plastic or candy basketballs, soccer balls, footballs and baseballs.
Symbolic Decorations
To decorate cupcakes in a movie star or television show theme, consider using symbolic items that represent the film or the characters. For instance, for a "Dora the Explorer" party, make star-shaped cupcakes or regular cupcakes with a piece of white fondant rolled up on each to look like a map. For a music star theme, decorate cupcakes with miniature candy or plastic headphones and microphones. Make microphone cupcakes by placing a cupcake on top of an ice cream cone.
Cupcake Cake
Turn a tray of cupcakes into a single icing picture. Arrange the cupcakes together on a tray to make a shape and spread a thick layer of whipped icing over the entire shape. For example, make a turtle by arranging cupcakes in an oval shape and then arranging additional cupcakes for the legs and head. Cover the cake shape in green icing and add eyes and other features with tinted icing. For a love theme, arrange the cupcakes into a heart shape and spread pink or red whipped icing over the heart.
