Look like you came straight from the islands in your Hawaiian costume.
Whether you're dressing up for Halloween, for a luau party or for any other occasion, you'll find something for both sexes and all ages when you need to wear a Hawaiian costume. Most costumes can be bought in stores, but with a little time and imagination, you can use things that you may already have at home to create an outfit.
Hula Dancer
Dressing as a hula dancer is probably the most popular Hawaiian-themed costume. The main piece of clothing for a hula dancer is a grass skirt, but you can also wear a sarong. You can wear a tube top, a bikini top or a coconut or shell bra. Although a hula dancer would typically go barefoot, you can choose to wear flip-flops. Don't forget to wear a lei, a flower over your ear and a flower head band, anklets and wrist bands.
Hawaiian Warrior
Being a Hawaiian warrior may be the male equivalent of dressing as a hula dancer. This is a simple costume for men because you don't really need a lot of accessories -- or clothing. The essential article of clothing for a Hawaiian tribal warrior costume is the loin cloth. Accessorize with a head band, anklets, wrist and arm bands made of green leaves or straw. Go barefoot or wear flip-flops. Complete the look by applying temporary tribal tattoos on your arms and legs.
Surfer
Both men and women can dress as surfers. A surfer costume's key piece is a pair of board shorts -- usually long for men and short for women. Men and women can wear a rash guard or T-shirt, or a man can go shirtless and a woman can wear a bikini top. You may want to wear a T-shirt with the "shaka" sign that says, "Hang Loose," a typically Hawaiian expression or greeting. The "shaka" is the sign given with your pinky and thumb extended and the remaining fingers closed. Flip-flops, shades and a shell necklace or bracelet can complete the look.
Magnum P.I.
You may remember "Magnum P.I." from the '80s, a television show set in Hawaii where Thomas Magnum, a private investigator, is played by Tom Selleck. You can wear short shorts or denim pants, a colorful Hawaiian shirt and white sneakers. Complete the look by wearing a baseball cap, a sporty chronograph watch and, of course, by painting on or gluing a fake, thick mustache on your face.
