Ideas For Outdoor Theme Parties

Break out the grill for your next outdoor theme party.

When the weather is pleasant, plan to throw an outdoor party. This type of party can occur in your backyard, at the local park or beach or even in a parking lot. There are many different outdoor themes to choose from, including fancy, dress-up parties and casual, low-key parties. No matter what type of outdoor party you host, spend time and energy on the decorations, food and other details. Does this Spark an idea?

Luau

Luau parties are perfect for outdoor areas with water features, such as a backyard with a swimming pool, a water park or beach. Instruct party guests to come dressed for the occasion in outfits such as grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts or bathing suits. Decorate the party area with bamboo fencing, tiki torches, flowers and surfboards. Play hula music in the background, and serve guests tropical foods, such as roasted pork, pineapple and coconut. Create tropical drink concoctions, including Mai Tais and rum punch.

Sports/Tailgate

The outdoor sports party can be fun anytime of the year, but especially in the autumn and spring when football and baseball seasons start. These times of year typically feature better outdoor temperatures as well. Outdoor parties can be hosted in your backyard or in the stadium parking lot as a tailgate party. Ask guests to wear their favorite team sport gear and consider giving prizes for the best face-painting designs. If the game is on, hook up a large-screen television or projector so guests won't miss a single play. If the party occurs pre-game, host a flag football game or other type of activity. Serve traditional stadium fare, such as popcorn, hot dogs and hamburgers.

Garden Tea Party

If you'd like to host a fancy outdoor party, plan a garden tea party. This type of party typically occurs in the afternoon and is a perfect theme for bridal showers, baby showers and women's birthdays. Ask guests to dress up in bright, fancy frocks. Decorate the garden area with potted plants and create a comfortable seating area, complete with tables and cushioned chairs. Hang white twinkling string lights or Chinese lanterns around the patio or garden area. Decorate the tables with tablecloths and vase bouquets. Serve traditional tea party foods, such as small sandwiches made of cucumber and cream cheese, scones, fruit platters and muffins. Provide a wide variety of teas and juices.

Western Barbecue

Western barbecues are common occurrences in the south, but you don't have live in Texas to host one. Ask guests to dress up like cowboys and cowgirls. Start by decorating your backyard with bales of hay and cardboard cut-outs of horses or cows. If you are hosting an evening event, hang camping lanterns, along with white string lights, for lighting needs. Decorate the tables with red-and-white checkered tablecloths, and serve western food, such as chili, barbecue, steaks and campfire beans. Provide s'mores for dessert.
