Ideas For Puppy Dog Cake

Model the dog cake after your favorite furry friend.

Any dog lover can appreciate a puppy dog cake. There are many dog cake decorating ideas, and they can be simple or complex depending on your comfort level with cake decorating. Dog cake decorating ideas also work well as suggestions for a professional baker if you plan to order the cake. Customize the cake to resemble the pet of the recipient or her favorite breed of dog. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Dog House

A dog house cake is made by stacking sheet cakes. Choose the size of the sheet cakes depending on how big you want the dog house to be. You'll stack four sheet cakes, so plan the sizes accordingly. You can also cut two larger sheet cakes in half to create the four pieces to stack. Spread a layer of frosting between each of the four cakes as you stack them. Use a serrated knife to trim the top of the cake into a roof shape. Ice the cake in the desired colors to create the dog house. Place more of the icing in a pastry bag with a round tip. Draw vertical lines on the sides of the cake to create the look of boards. Cut out a half circle shape from fondant and place it on the front of the cake as the door. Add a dog toy next to the dog house to complete the cake design.

Shaped Sheet Cake

Instead of decorating a plain sheet cake, cut the cake into the shape of a dog. Create a template for the dog on a piece of thin cardboard. Place the template on top of a sheet cake. Use a sharp knife to cut around the template. Remove the extra cake, and brush away any crumbs. Ice the cake with frosting tinted to the desired color. A grass decorating tip can be used to create the look of fur, as the tip has lots of small holes on it. Squeeze the pastry bag and pull the tip away from the cake slowly until the desired length of "fur" is created. Release the pressure on the bag. Continue adding the fur until the cake is covered. Use additional frosting to add spots and other details on the fur. Add the dog's facial features to complete the cake.

Dog Paw Print

A paw print is a simple option for creating a dog-themed cake. Start with a sheet cake or round cake. Use icing to draw a paw print on the cake. Fill it in with brown or black frosting. You can also create a series of dog prints running across a cake. Add a small plastic toy dog to the top of the cake at the end of the paw print trail. The dog cake makes an extra gift for a birthday child.

Dog Face

A round cake allows you to make a simple dog-face cake. Ice the round cake in the desired color. White or brown work well. Black icing takes a lot of food coloring to create and can turn tongues and faces black, so it is better for small accents on the dog's face. Use cupcakes to create the dog's ears. Ice them and place them right next to the round cake. Add the eyes, nose, mouth and other details to the cake with icing.
