Ideas For Rock Star Cakes

A guitar cake is suitable for a budding rock star.

A rock star-themed party embraces the lavishness and punk glamor of the rock lifestyle, and a centerpiece cake is a dessert fit for any wanna-be rock star. Rock star cakes range from the kid-friendly and playful for birthday parties to the more sophisticated and elaborate for graduations or groom's cakes. The right cake for your party depends on the overall party theme and your skills as a cake decorator. Does this Spark an idea?

Decorated Sheet Cakes

Sheet cakes are ideal for novice decorators because they provide ample flat space for simple decorating. Choose a bright, bold icing color like pink, purple or blue. Edible glitter or luster dust adds a rock star sparkle to the cake. Edible printing systems allow you to print out photos on sheets of icing paper that can be transferred to the cake. For example, choose a photo of the guest of honor dressed in full rock star regalia holding an inflatable guitar.

Another option is to decorate the top of the cake as a concert hall. Dedicate the top half of the cake to be a bird's eye view of a stage made with brown icing. Gum paste is a moldable, edible food clay suitable for creating simple body forms to represent the guest of honor and a packed concert hall. Premade three-dimensional decorations like drum sets, guitars and speakers add dimension to the cake.

Shaped Cakes

Shaped baking pans all you to create a rock star-themed form for decorating. Star-shaped pans are a literal interpretation of the theme. Frost the star-shaped cake in a bright neon color or wrap it with smooth fondant for a cleaner finish. Pipe a birthday or congratulatory message on the side of the cake and leave the top open for decorative details like edible glitter, piped guitars or gum paste stars. A triangular pan creates a cake that can be frosted to resemble a guitar pick customized with the guest of honor's name. Even a simple round pan transforms into a record when iced in glossy black gels. Mark the record lines by running a toothpick around the cake in concentric circles and create a customized center label using edible icing sheets.

Instrument Cakes

Consider carving an instrument form out of several stacked sheet cakes. For a guitar cake, stack two to four layers of 9-by-12 inch rectangular sheet cakes and outline the body form with a knife edge; you can also print out a template and then cut out the form for carving. For the neck of the guitar, use the cake scraps or mold crispy rice squares for a more lightweight option. Fondant is best for covering carved cakes because it creates smooth lines. Black licorice serves as the strings and glitter dust gives metallic knobs a realistic sheen. If you aren't adept at carving, use several differently sized round pans to make several stacked rounds and arrange them to look like a drum kit. Fondant-wrapped bread sticks are edible and realistic drumsticks.

Tiered Cakes

For a rock star-themed party, stack several round tiers so that they are level in the back and create a stair-like effect in the front. Decorate the front of each tier with slices of marshmallows that resemble the illuminated stairwells of a concert hall or event venue. The top tier serves as the stage of the cake, so decorate it with a gum paste or fondant microphone. Tiered cakes lend themselves well to three-dimensional details. For example, you could suspend gum paste glitter stars on sturdy wires and decorate each tier to look like the fireworks finale of a rock concert. For a more sophisticated look, pipe music notes and bars around each tier and top the cake off with two sheets of gum paste decorated to look like concert tickets.
