Make Holiday Signs

Spread holiday cheer with a holiday sign.

Holidays create unity as people around the globe join together in the celebration of a common event. Children and adults alike can help spread holiday cheer through the creation of a holiday sign. These signs can be displayed in front of your home, shown at a holiday-themed parade or added to the household decorations you have in commemoration of the holiday. Not only does creating a holiday sign help you get into a festive mood, but it also allows you to spread holiday cheer to others. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use poster or foam board to create your holiday sign. Purchase the board in plain white or in a holiday-themed color, such as green for a Christmas sign or orange for a Halloween sign. If you plan to use your sign outside, it is advantageous to start with a thicker backing, such as foam board, as it will better stand up against the outdoor elements.

2. Select colors representative of the holiday. Consider the colors that are most commonly associated with your holiday when selecting hues to integrate into your design. For example, you would likely use pastel colors for an Easter sign and rustic fall colors for a Thanksgiving sign.

3. Gather coloring supplies and paper in your selected colors. Pick up markers, paint or construction paper that match your selected color palette. If your sign board is a dark color, you should use construction paper to make your lettering and pictures for your sign so that the dominant background color does not bleed through your additions.

4. Feature a holiday-themed message in the center of your sign. Spread cheer with a festive tiding. You can use a common message such as "Peace on Earth," or something all your own. Select a message that reflects both the holiday and your personality to make the sign uniquely yours.

5. Add symbols representative of the holiday. Finish off your sign design with pictures or symbols. Clip these pictures out of magazines or ads, print them off the Internet or draw them yourself. Scatter them around the holiday sign to accent your words and more effectively convey your message.
