Plan A Casual Wedding Reception

A casual wedding reception opens up your venue options.

Casual receptions can often save the bride and groom money. They are often shorter than more elaborate wedding receptions, which frees up time for both the guests and the newlyweds, and they can help keep the theme of the entire ceremony relaxed and fun. Planning a casual affair will also save the couple prep time and should alleviate some stress.

Instructions

1. Cut back on venue costs. Eliminate large banquet halls and hotel affairs. Host your elaborate wedding at a restaurant or even in your own backyard. Depending on your theme, a backyard or park could be ideal. If you are thinking of having a barbecue, choose a local park that has shelters and tables in case of poor weather conditions. If you foresee poor weather conditions, host the reception at your own home and entertain without a rental fee or permit.

2. Opt for finger food options as opposed to a dinner. A dinner is generally reserved for more formal receptions. Finger foods are inexpensive -- you and family members can prepare them at home a few days before the event. Set up buffet tables and allow your guests to choose which finger foods to eat. This style of food presentation will also save you from hiring a wait staff.

3. Set a specific time limit for your casual wedding reception. On the invitations, advertise, for example, that the reception will be held from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Casual receptions generally run less than three hours. They can be held in the morning, afternoon, or evening.

4. Avoid hiring a band or DJ for your casual wedding reception. For music, play your favorite mixes through CD speakers or through a sound system.
