Repair A Canon Electric Typewriter

You can repair and troubleshoot your Canon electric typewriter.

Electric typewriter technology has long been replaced by PCs and laptop computers, but before the rise of the computer Canon released a number of electric typewriter models that are still used by many writers. Many basic repairs can be performed by the average user. These usually include ribbon cartridge and ink replacement. Additionally there are a number of ways to troubleshoot the typewriter to single out any major electrical or mechanical repairs that are needed.

Instructions

General Troubleshooting

1. Place the typewriter upside down on a perfectly flat surface. Locate the rubber feet on the bottom side the typewriter's casing. Place a carpenter's level on top of two rubber feet. If the feet are not level, the typewriter may not type in a straight line. Tighten the screws fastening the rubber feet to the typewriter until they are level.

2. Place the typewriter face up and remove the top cover. Check each side of the typewriter's casing for a release button. If this release button is in the locked position, the keys on the typewriter will not move.

3. Determine if the electric typewriter has both a manual and an electric mode, and if so make sure the electric mode is turned on. If your typewriter is completely electric, you could have a blown fuse or a bad power supply.

Replacing the Ribbon Cartridge

4. Turn off the typewriter and disconnect the main power cord from the nearest electrical outlet.

5. Locate the ribbon cartridge inside the access hole on the top side of the typewriter. Press on the ribbon cartridge's release button and pull the cartridge from its compartment.

6. Align the holes on the bottom side of the cartridge with the hooks inside the cartridge compartment. Place your new ribbon cartridge into the compartment inside the typewriter. Press down on the cartridge until it snaps into place. Use your fingers to wind up the ribbon cartridge until the ribbon is tight.
