Plan A Luau

Serve tropical drinks at your luau party.

When the weather is warm, celebrate with a luau in your backyard. Ask guests to wear Hawaiian shirts -- the louder the better -- and welcome them with tropical drinks. The laid-back get-together is an opportunity to gather friends, enjoy island-inspired food and drink, and share some aloha spirit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Come up with a tropical-inspired menu. Go all out by with roasted pig for a main course. Or keep it simple with Asian-style chicken skewers and foods accented with pineapple. Serve cut-up tropical fruits, such as mangoes, papayas and bananas.

2. Greet guests with leis and decorate your yard with tiki torches. Set the scene with inflatable palm trees, paper goods featuring tiki gods or hula dancers, and a tiki bar. Play island music and set up a stage for impromptu hula dancing.

3. Plan games, such as limbo or a hula hoop contest. Hold a tacky tourist relay where guests race to put on flippers, sunscreen, sunglasses and hats. Hold a contest for the loudest Hawaiian shirt.

4. Do not skimp on the libations. Anything tequila- or rum-based will be appropriate. Make a rum punch, and include tiny umbrellas and pineapple skewers as accents.
