Ideas For A Winter Spongebob Luau

Holiday Spongebob

A SpongeBob-themed party is nearly synonymous with a luau, since he and his friends live "under the sea." In the winter, party planners have to think creatively to transfer the best SpongeBob Luau ideas to snowy and cold conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

Outdoors

Even if you can't enjoy a party outdoors, that doesn't mean you can't decorate the entryway to the location in full luau fashion. If snow is present, use it to your advantage. Make some SpongeBob snowmen or sculptures. Make a tall pineapple out of snow, and use a sprig of greenery for the top. Create mounds of snow to stick tiki torches in.

If there is no snow and the ground is frozen, try putting together a few flower pots with fresh soil and stick torches in before they freeze up. Use large posters of SpongeBob and his friends backed with cardboard and held up with stakes as greeters. There are even large blow-up yard decorations featuring SpongeBob in holiday fashion if the party is falling close to the holiday season.

Decorating

Indoors, the SpongeBob luau can look much like any summer luau. Many of the party supplies will be on sale at the end of the summer, so look for sales. Check children's party supply stores for SpongeBob plates and napkins and decorations.

Try mixing the two opposing seasons together anywhere you see an opportunity. String hibiscus flowers on a Christmas tree or into swags of greenery for decoration. Find some SpongeBob ornaments and hang these on the tree, as well, or off of the swags over doorways. Use tabletop tiki torches with small wreathes around their bases as centerpieces on the tables.

Have friends dress in winter swimwear. Boys can put sweatpants under swimsuits and girls can wear grass skirts and leis over jeans or leggings.

Entertaining

Use fresh winter ingredients with a Hawaiian twist. Hawaiian sweet potato casserole with bananas and pineapples is a warm and tasty twist on an old winter favorite and a homage to SpongeBob's home. Pork and shrimp are great meats for a luau, while crab cakes can make hearty "crabby patties" for sandwiches.

For games, turn to the characters and what they do on the show. Sandy the Squirrel would be hibernating in the winter, so try adding "nuts for the winter" into the regular pinata mix. These can be real nuts or nut-based candy, but be wary of people with nut allergies. Whoever can grab the most nuts wins a special prize.

Try a snowball fight instead of pin the tail on the donkey. Hang a large poster of Plankton on the wall and have the guests throw small balls of shaved ice or sticky rubber balls at Plankton. Whoever lands closest to the center of his face wins.
