Luau Birthday Party Games For Girls

Incorporate leis into luau birthday party games.

Theme birthday parties are always a hit with children, and when the weather gets warmer, a luau theme party is sure to please your birthday girl. After you plan the menu--likely featuring fruit salad and grilled kebabs-- and have chosen tropical decorations, it's time to plan luau party games to keep the festive vibe going. Does this Spark an idea?

Hula Hoopit

Put a twist on the classic hula hoop contest with music and a few pre-made notecards. Before the party, write a few hula hoop instructions on the notecards, such as "hula on your arm" or "blind hula" (in which the girls have to cover their eyes while they hula). Give each girl a hula hoop, have the girls spread out and start the music. Let them hula the regular way at first, then start calling out the notecards. Any time a girl drops her hula, she has to sit out and watch the others. Continue going through the cards until one girl is the hula champion.

Limbo Relay

Make traditional limbo more competitive by dividing the girls into two teams, either with a limbo stick for each team or one long limbo stick. Line the girls up and give the first girl a pair of flip flops (or make the game extra challenging by purchasing a pair of comic, oversized flip flops). Start the music; the girls must limbo successfully while wearing the flip flops, then slip the shoes off for the next teammate to wear as they limbo. The first team to finish with each girl having successfully done the limbo under the pole wins.

Hawaiian Princess Relay Race

This game gives every girl at the party a chance to dress like a hula princess, if only for a few seconds. Gather several hula costume items such as a grass skirt, coconut bra, black wig, lei and flowered jewelry. Divide girls into two or more teams (one team for each complete outfit). Line up the costumes on one side of the yard, and have girls line up in their teams on the other side. The girls ideally should wear bathing suits, but the costumes should be big enough to put on over regular clothes. Say "Go!" and the first teammates race to their costumes, fully dress, and take the costume off and race back to tag the next teammate. Each girl follows suit, and the first team to finish wins.
