Whether you're of Korean decent and you want to make a decoration to honor your heritage, or you're teaching children about the Korean culture, creating a Korean lantern decoration is a good choice. Each year, the Lotus Lantern Festival is held in Seoul, South Korea, to celebrate the birth of Buddha, founder of the Buddhist religion. During this festival, colorful lanterns are lit to commemorate the event. With a few basic craft supplies, you can easily create a Korean lantern decoration to display in your home or classroom.
Instructions
1. Lay a piece of tissue paper on a flat surface. Use colorful markers to draw decorative elements on the tissue paper. Draw a traditional lotus flower, write Korean characters or draw simple designs on the tissue paper. When drawing, press gently on the paper to avoid tearing it.
2. Add further embellishments to the tissue paper with glitter glue. Outline the designs you have drawn on the paper, or draw additional designs with the glitter glue. Set the paper aside until the glitter glue is completely dry.
3. Measure two, 3-inch-wide, 8-inch-long pieces of construction paper. Cut the measured pieces into strips, creating two, 3-inch-wide rectangles.
4. Turn the tissue paper over so that the decorated surface is facing down. Glue one of the construction paper strips to the top of the tissue paper and one of the strips to the bottom of the tissue paper. Allow the glue to dry completely.
5. Apply glue along one of the vertical sides of the paper. Roll the paper into a cylinder so that the glued end of the paper slightly overlaps on the opposite side of the paper. Press the glued side of the paper onto the opposite side of the paper. Keep pressing for about one minute to allow a bond to form between the glue and the opposite side of the paper. Set the cylinder aside until completely dry.
6. Punch a hole in each side of the top of the cylinder with a hole puncher; the holes should be opposite one another.
7. Cut a length of yarn. Thread one end of the yarn through one of the holes. Tie a knot in the end of the yarn to prevent it from falling through the hole. Thread the other end of the yarn through the second hole. Tie a knot in the end of the yarn to prevent it from falling through the hole.
8. Hang the decoration from the string. Suspend the decoration from a ceiling, a wall or any other place you'd like.
