Make Recipe Card Holders

A sturdy recipe card holder will ensure your recipes don't get lost in the shuffle while baking.

When you're in the kitchen baking or making a big meal, recipe cards can get lost in the shuffle, but if you've got a handy recipe card holder, it will hold your recipe up, and there's no chance of losing it. This is a fun craft for kids, and recipe card holders make great holiday gifts, as well.

Instructions

1. Mix a batch of homemade, bakeable clay. In a bowl, combine 2 cups of white flour, 1 cup of salt, 1 cup of water and 2 tbsp. of vegetable oil. Knead the dough until all of the ingredients are well meshed. Add food coloring to make dough the color of your choice. You can also have kids paint the dough after it has been cooked.

2. Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.

3. Roll out dough with a rolling pin to a thickness of about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Cut out three or four shapes with the same cookie cutter and stack them together to make a solid base that won't wobble. Get creative with this part, and adhere to any upcoming holiday themes to make the project even more fun.

4. Cut about 6 to 8 inches from the bottom of an old wire hanger with tin snips. Use your needle nose pliers to bend one end of the hanger into two circles, similar to the form of a key ring, and push them tight together. Test out your circles by inserting a recipe card or index card to make sure it will hold the card tightly in place. You may also use wire card holders found in craft and flower shops.

5. Insert your card holder into the center of your dough creation. Lay your unbaked, clay cardholders on a foil-covered cookie sheet and put them into the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes. Monitor while baking, and remove the pieces once they are golden brown. Allow to cool for up to 2 hours, as the wire will be incredibly hot and could burn someone. If you don't have access to an oven for this craft, you can also forego baking, and leave the base to air-dry for 24 to 48 hours. The thicker the base, the longer drying time required.

6. Paint and design the card holders if you haven't already added food coloring.
