Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to the appropriate temperature for your recipe and begin mixing the batter. Follow the instructions on the box to mix the batter---or, use your own family-favorite cupcake recipe.
2. Insert paper cups into a muffin tray and pour the cupcake batter into each cup until the cups are about 3/4 of the way full. This will make for large, fluffy cupcakes when the batter rises in the oven.
3. Bake the cupcakes for the recommended amount of time and remove them from the oven. Set the cupcakes onto a baking rack so they can cool. You should never ice a warm cupcake because the heat from the cupcake will cause the icing to melt, resulting in a gooey mess.
4. Mix up a quantity of buttercream icing in a bowl. Add a bright colored food coloring to the icing to complement the color theme of your luau. Bright pinks or tropical blues are good color choices. When the icing is ready, put it into a piping bag with a decorative tip on the end.
5. Roll out your fondant onto a flat surface that is covered in confectioner's sugar. Roll it out until it is about 1/8 inch thick. When it is flat, use a small, teardrop shaped cookie cutter to cut out several petals. You need five petals to create one cupcake, so multiply the number of cupcakes you made by five to find out how many petals you need to cut out.
6. Glue the petals together to form plumeria flowers. Use a small quantity of royal icing to glue the petals together in a flower shape. Repeat this with the remaining petals until you have one flower for each cupcake. Paint the centers of each flower with yellow luster dust for an added finish.
7. Pipe buttercream icing on top of each cupcake. To make the perfect swirl, hold the tip of your icing bag ¼ inch above the cupcake and pipe a circle of icing from the outer edge, working inwards. Pull the tip away and then add a second swirl of icing on top, ending at the very center of the cupcake. Pull the tip upwards to complete the cupcake.
8. Add one plumeria flower to the top of each cupcake to finish the luau themed treats.
